There is really no such thing as senior medical insurance.   There is insurance for those who are Medicare eligible and insurance for those who are not.  Medicare is available for people age 65 or older, younger people with disabilities and people with End Stage Renal Disease.  If you are Medicare eligible you are able to enroll in additional coverage such as Medigap

What are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) fills in the gaps not covered by Original Medicare. Although Medigap plans are underwritten by  private insurance companies, they are federally regulated. This just means that a Medigap Plan G offered by one company is equal in core benefits with a Medigap Plan G from another company.

What kind of things does Medigap cover?

Depends on the type of plan you choose. Medigap Plan F covers the following;

  • Medicare Part A & B Co-insurance and Copays
  • Medicare Part A & B Deductibles
  • Adds an additional 365 days of hospitalization
  • Part B excess charges
  • First three pints of blood for a transfusion
  • Foreign emergency healthcare
  • And More

What Types of Medigap Plans are Available?

Medigap plans are assigned letters such as Plan A, Plan G or Plan F (featured above).  Some are much more popular than others based on their coverage and cost.  Learn more about different Medigap plans here.

What About Prescription Drug Coverage?

Medigap and Original Medicare do not cover prescription drugs. We suggest those who are Medicare eligible consider a stand alone prescription drug plans, called Medicare Part D.
