To start a Medigap policy, aka Medicare Supplement insurance, there are a few things you need to do.
1) Choose a Medigap Plan
This is pretty obvious, but you need to compare the 10 standardized Medigap policies available. To choose a plan you’ll want to see which plans are available in your area and weigh both your monthly budget and your health needs before choosing a plan.
2) Enroll in a Medigap Plan
Once you’ve chosen your Medigap plan you’ll want to enroll. Either you or your broker may fill out your application (if your agent fills it out make sure to double check that your personal information is correct). If you enroll during your 6 month Medigap open enrollment (which begins the first day of your 65th birth month) you will be enrolled regardless of preexisting conditions.
3) Start Your Medigap Plan
Here are few things to do after you enroll:
- Ask your broker what your Medigap effective date is
- Your Medigap plan generally starts the 1st of the month after you enroll
- If you don’t get your Medigap plan within 30 days of enrollment contact your broker
- If you don’t get your Medigap plan within 60 days contact your State Insurance Department
