Whether you are a Senior just turning 65 or Medicare eligible due to end stage renal or certain disabilities, everything you’ve known about health insurance may now different. Medicare may be very different from anything you’ve experienced in the past. We’ve broken down the 3 things you should consider if you are thinking about purchasing a Medicare Supplemental plan (Medigap) in addition to Medicare.

Original Medicare

Most people start with Original Medicare:  Medicare Part A and Part B. Part A is hospital coverage, and Part B is medical coverage.  You cannot enroll in a Medigap plan without Original Medicare

Key Points of Original Medicare

Many people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A
Sign up for Part B during your initial enrollment or there could be penalties
There can be financial gaps in Medicare’s coverage

Medigap

Medicare Supplemental Plans, AKA Medigap, fill in the gaps that Medicare may not cover.

Key Points of Medigap

Federally Standardized Plans, so you can often select an insurance provider based on price
Offers range of coverage based on Plan letter
All plans cover coinsurance for hospital stays up to 365 days
Modernized Medigap plans do not cover Rx

Prescription Coverage

Medicare Part D drug coverage is not included by either Original Medicare or Medigap. Prescription drugs (sometimes called Rx) can be some of the most costly bills for seniors, so it’s important to add this coverage as well.

Key Points of Rx Coverage

Sign up during your initial enrollment or there may be a penalty
Premiums can be automatically deducted from your Social Security
Each Part D provider covers different drugs so make sure to verify your prescriptions are covered
