Enrolling in a Medigap plan is easier than you think. Here are the four steps you’ll need to do.

Step 1: Enroll in Original Medicare

Before you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) you need to be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and B. If you’re not automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, you’ll want to enroll yourself.

Step 2: Decide What Benefits you Need

Before you even get a Medigap quote, you’ll want to decide what benefits you’ll need. The majority of Medigap enrollees choose a Medigap Plan G because it covers everything that a Medigap plan can offer. However, there are Medigap options lettered from A-N that may better suit your needs. Then you want to narrow it down to one or two choices that work best for you.

Step 3: Get a Medigap Quote

Once you have narrowed down your Medigap options you’ll want to get a Medigap quote. Truth, you can shop by price. Remember that all Medigap lettered plans are equal to another company’s lettered plan (ie. Company X’s Plan A offers the same coverage as Company Y’s Plan A).

Step 4: Enroll in Medigap

Once you have decided on a Medigap plan that meets both your benefit needs and your budget, then you’ll enroll. You don’t want to wait, because in most states you only have a 6 month window that guarantees enrollment in a Medigap policy.
