Hearing loss is a major concern for some Medicare beneficiaries. While it may be a concern, many do not know if Original Medicare or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) cover the costs for hearing aids. It’s a simple answer, and one you’re not going to like.
Medigap and Hearing Aids
Neither Original Medicare or Medigap covers traditional hearing aids, fittings for hearing aids, and hearing exams. Both Original Medicare and Medigap, however, cover diagnostic hearing exams, balance tests, and Medicare covers cochlear implants. All Medigap plans will cover all or part of your Part B coinsurance and copays for these diagnostic services, but only Plan F and C will cover your Part B deductible $257.

How to get Hearing Aid Coverage
Now that you’ve read the bad news, there are some ways to help cover these costs. Some of our clients have told us they have found stand-alone hearing aid insurance plans or through a Medicare Advantage plan. Even if available, they typically do not offer a lot of coverage, as most put a cap on what the plan will cover (usually around $1000) and only work with a few expensive vendors. Your best bet may be to pay out of pocket for the best-priced hearing aid you can find.
