Medicare is the rite of passage for all of us when we turn 65. Medicare is basic insurance offered by the federal government to make sure that seniors have health coverage. Even though it is a rite of passage, there are specific enrollment periods for Medicare and Medicare’s different options.
Original Medicare and Its Options
First off there is Medicare which is broken down into two parts: Part A, hospitalization coverage, and Part B, medical coverage. But after that, you may choose to do a few things:
- Replace Original Medicare: Medicare Advantage
- Supplement Original Medicare: Medigap
- Get Prescription Coverage: Medicare Part D
When to Enroll in Medicare
Here are the following enrollment time:
- Original Medicare: 7 month initial enrollment. Begins 3 months prior to your 65th birth month, the month of your 65th birthday, and the 3 months following.
- Medicare Part B: If you did not sign up there is a general enrollment period from Jan 1 to Mar 31.
- Medicare Advantage: 7 month initial enrollment.
- Medigap: 6 month open enrollment starts the month of your 65th birthday, unless you are eligible outside of this period**
- Medicare Part D: 7 month initial Medicare enrollment
**You may enroll without medical underwriting if you are eligible due to guaranteed issue right or retiring after you turn 65.
