Medicare Part D program helps seniors save on the high cost of prescription drugs. We have made it simple to choose how you would like to obtain your senior drug coverage.
Two Ways to Get Drug Coverage:
The following are the two ways to get drug coverage if you have Original Medicare without job-based insurance:
- Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, or PDPs
- Medicare Advantage plans with Prescription Drug coverage, or MA-PDs
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans
Prescription Drug Plans are stand-alone drug health plans that cover prescriptions only.
You choose a PDP if you have one of the following:
- Original Medicare (Medicare Part A or B)
- Medicare Supplemental, or Medigap
- Either a Medicare Cost Plan or one of the Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans which do not already include drug coverage
Medicare Advantage plans with Prescription Drug coverage
These are health plans that include drug coverage. If your plan has drug coverage you cannot purchase a separate PDP. The majority of Medicare Advantage plans are: HMOs, PPOs, PFFS, and Special Needs Plans (SNPs). There are some Medicare Advantage Plans that do not include prescription drug coverage and in that case you would want to purchase a separate plan.
How to Choose a Drug Plan
Choose a plan based on your medical history, costs, preferred pharmacy, and decide if you would prefer a stand-alone plan or one that is bundled. If you are on a budget get a bundled Medicare Advantage Plan, however if you can afford more comprehensive coverage go for the Medicare, Medigap, Part D combo.
