Medigap Roommate Discount can be an easy way to save money on your Med Supp premiums.

What is the Medigap HouseHold Discount?

Before you can understand the Medigap “Roommate” Discount you must first understand the Medigap Household Discount (or HHD). The HHD is a monthly price reduction on your premiums if two or more people living at the same address BOTH have a Medigap policy with the same insurance provider. They don’t have to be married but they must live at the same address and both be Medicare-eligible. People who qualify for this discount will receive anywhere from 5% to 12% off each. Note: Not all insurance providers offer the HHD and some require that you must be on the exact same Medigap plan to qualify. If someone in your house is about to enroll on the same Medigap policy as you, call us ASAP at 800-930-7956 so we can make sure you both get the House Hold Discount.

What is a Medigap Roommate Discount?

The Medigap “Roommate” discount is like HHD but has less strict requirements. If you are applying for Medigap and have someone else in your house (even if they are not 65 and on Medicare) you could qualify for a Roommate discount. This discount, which is sometimes called the “Living With Someone” discount, varies by insurance carrier. Some insurance providers will require that the other person is over 50 while others just require that the other person living in the house is over 18. So to be clear, you can get the Medigap Roommate Discount even if you are the only one enrolling in Medigap at this time (as long as a qualifying second person is living in the house).

Who offers the Medigap Roommate Discount?

Most Medigap insurance providers DO NOT offer the Roommate discount. Only a few insurance carriers currently offer a discount to Medigap applicants for those having someone else living in the house who isn’t planning on enrolling on the same plan. Unlike the HHD, we don’t show the Medigap Roommate Discount on our quoting engine but WE ARE WORKING ON IT! Give us a call at 800-930-7956 to know which insurance carriers offer the Roommate discount in your area.

How much is the Medigap Roommate Discount?

This varies by insurance provider but it is usually equal to or less than the household discount. Give us a call at 800-930-7956 to see how much it is in your area.

Can your “Roommate” be your spouse?

Yes. We know it is weird to refer to your spouse as your roommate but your spouse can be considered your roommate for this discount. Basically, the word “roommate” is the industry jargon to see if there is someone else living in the house. So if your spouse is 55 and you are 65 and enrolling in Medigap, you could qualify for the roommate discount. In some cases, insurance providers will consider your child who is living with you as your roommate (if they meet the full criteria).

Other Discounts Offered by Medigap
