“I thought Obamacare said we cannot be turned down for pre-existing conditions! How could I be turned down for Medigap???” This is a question we get regularly so we wanted clarify the situation.
ObamaCare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, has a provision that disallows preexisting conditions to be a factor in insurance approval. But will this affect Medicare Supplemental insurance? No.
Medigap and Preexisting Conditions
Medigap plans are not subject to the new ACA law that requires insurance companies to enroll persons regardless of preexisting conditions. If you enroll during the open enrollment period, Medicare eligible individuals do not have to worry about preexisting conditions. You are guaranteed to be approved. But if you apply outside your initial enrollment period (or SEP), you can be turned down from Medigap just like before.
What Medigap Covers
Medigap fills in the gaps that Original Medicare may not cover. Medigap Plan F can save seniors thousands each year. Medigap covers things like Medicare Part A’s and B’s deductibles, coinsurance, and excess charges, as well as adding extras like foreign emergency care and gym memberships.
So basically make sure you sign up in the initial 6 month period that begins the first day of the month you turn 65. To sign up for a Medigap plan or if you have any further questions call 800-930-7956 or contact Senior65.com.
